The Newmarket Third Grade uses the Scott Foresman Reading Street Program, in conjunction with the teaching practices and methodology of Carol Tollman and the Keys to Literacy, as the basis of our Language Arts curriculum. The components of our program are spelling and phonemic awareness, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and writing.
Students are assigned between 15-20 spelling words weekly that come from the Scott Foresman Program and align with the week's phonetic pattern. Spelling tests are given on Fridays and kept in a small spelling book in the classroom. Between 7 and 9 vocabulary words from the weekly story are taught and reinforced through various activities. Knowledge of the vocabulary is assessed through weekly selection quizzes on the story of the week. Reading Groups are held daily to practice reading strategies, and to increase fluency and comprehension. We spend the first half of the week reading from the Scott Foresman anthology and the second half of the week exploring literature through chapter books. We are fortunate, this year, to be able to share reading groups with Miss Grube's class. This allows us to create more targeted reading groups. Groups are regularly rotated, so your child might read with a variety of adults
The instruction of writing will be implemented and assessed using journal/narrative writing, weekly letter writing home, persuasive and descriptive writing, summary and main idea writing, and non fiction, theme based writing. Students will be scaffolded through the writing process, from planning to editing and sharing.
